20th Annual February 14th Women’s Memorial March needs your help…
The February 14th Women’s Memorial March is coming upon its 20th year. The WMM began after the brutal and tragic murder of a Coast Salish woman in Vancouver’s downtown eastside (dtes) at the end of January. The particularly brutal nature in which she was murdered was the catalyst for women in the community who were fed up with the continued violence and murders of women. The women organized a march that was to take place on Valentine’s Day, they marched through the dtes to raise awareness around this issue.
This year we begin a new chapter, the missing women inquiry will begin shortly after the New Year. We the February 14th Women’s Memorial March Committee have requested Intervenor Status to address the issues of violence against women in the downtown eastside and to help gain answers to the missing women question.
This year we are asking you to be extra generous so we may be able to hold two weeks of events leading up to the February 14th Women’s Memorial March. Some of the planned events are the Screening of “Finding Dawn” a film by acclaimed Metis’ film maker Christine Welsh, Art Auction and various other events for women in the community. Each year the WMM committee must raise funds to pay for such things as hall rental, sound system, food, red & yellow roses, memorial brochures, posters, candles, tobacco and other expenses. If you would like to sponsor one component of this years march please call Marlene at (604) 665-3005.
Last year over 4,000 people joined us in the memorial march. You are welcome to join us at the march, please respect the march and leave your agency banners at home as the February 14th Women’s Memorial March carries five banners to honour the women. The February 14th Women’s Memorial March is one of the largest and longest running marches in the nation. The February 14th WMM stands in unity with other cities holding memorial marches in Victoria, Prince George, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal, we continue to grow one community at a time until violence against women ends.

2010: The February 14th Women’s Memorial March needs your help
The death of many vulnerable women from the Downtown Eastside continues to leave family, friends, loved ones and community members with an overwhelming sense of grief and loss. Many other women have vanished from the streets without a trace. Each Valentine’s Day, the February 14th Women’s Memorial March is an opportunity for the community and those that support us to come together to honour these murdered and missing women.
The February 14th Women’s Memorial March is made possible by organizations and individuals like you and is held to honour the lives of women who die each year due to violence and to remember the women who are still missing. Each year the Memorial March committee must raise funds to pay for such things as hall rental, sound system, food, red & yellow roses, memorial brochures, blankets, posters, candles, tobacco and other expenses. A donation to the February 14th Women’s Memorial March on behalf of a friend or family member is also a meaningful holiday gift.
Please make cheques payable to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, and include Women’s Memorial March on the memo line. Mail cheques to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, 302 Columbia St. Vancouver, BC V6A 4J1.
All donations over $10 will be gratefully acknowledged with a tax deductible receipt.
We look forward to you joining us at the 19th Annual February 14th Women’s Memorial March. The March takes place on Sunday, February 14, and begins at 12pm at the Carnegie Community Centre, 401 Main Street, Vancouver. The Women’s Memorial March carries banners to honour the women. We request that you leave your agency banners at home. Thank you for respecting the march.
